How we handle your data
The short version
- We collect what the app needs to work: your account, your household or galley, the allergies you enter, your menus and your messages.
- We do not sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
- Allergies are used only to plan and filter menus. The filter is a tool, not a guarantee.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time: Your account, then Delete account.
- Questions: hello@bebetterhuman.store
Who we are
Chef Nils is made by BeBetterHuman LLC, 1415 SW 24th Ct, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315, USA ("we"). We decide how your personal data is used, and we are the people to contact about it: hello@bebetterhuman.store.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your account: email address, name, password, the plan you chose and whether your account is approved. | To sign you in and open the right parts of the app. Your password is stored as a hash by our sign-in provider; we never see it. |
| Your household or galley: its name, the names of the people at the table (including people without an account), their allergies, dislikes and notes, menus, shopping ticks, tonight's plan and join codes. | To plan menus around the people you cook for and share them with the people in your household or galley. |
| Guest preference sheets: allergies and dislikes a guest types into a sheet you send them. Guests do not need an account. | To plan the meal for that guest. |
| Galley messages: what you write, who it is addressed to, the name you write under, and when it was read. | To deliver the message to the right people. |
| Reports, blocks and hidden people: a report's reason, your optional note, a copy of the reported message and who reported it; who a galley's chef has blocked; whom you have hidden. | To keep galleys safe and to answer reports. |
| Recipes and feedback you send us. | To add recipes to the shared library and to improve the app. |
| Device and usage: a device identifier the app creates, a device label, when the device was first and last seen, and usage events such as opening the app or a recipe, searching, creating a menu and viewing a shopping list. | To run your account across devices and to see which parts of the app are used, so we know what to fix. |
| Notification tokens for your phone or browser, if you allow notifications. | To deliver galley messages and reminders. |
Allergies are health information
We treat the allergies and intolerances you enter as health information. They are used only to plan and filter menus and to show them to the people in your household or galley who plan the food. They are never used for advertising. The allergen filter and labels are a planning tool, not a guarantee: always check ingredients and labels yourself.
Stays on your device
Recipes you keep only on your device, and photos you attach to them, are not uploaded.
Who can see what
- In a household, its members see the people at the table and their allergies, and the household's menus.
- In a galley, the chef sees the galley's people, menus and messages. Crew see the menus. Guests see course names only, never recipes, and never other people's allergies. The principal, if the chef allows it, sees which allergens each course contains.
- Messages are seen by the people they are addressed to and by the galley's chef.
- Reports are read by Chef Nils support. A galley's chef sees only that a member's message was reported and why, never who reported it.
- Your hidden list is seen only by you.
Services we use
These companies process data for us, only to provide their service:
- Supabase: our database, sign-in and server functions. Everything in the table above is stored there, and sign-in emails are sent through it.
- Netlify: hosts the web app and this website.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging: delivers notifications, using your device's notification token and a Firebase installation identifier. We do not use Firebase Analytics.
- Apple Push Notification service and your browser's push service deliver notifications to iPhones and browsers.
- Google Fonts: this website loads its fonts from Google, which receives your IP address when you visit.
These services may process data in the United States and other countries.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent your personal data.
- We do not show ads, and we do not use your data for advertising.
- We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account exists. When you delete your account:
- your sign-in, email address and name, your usage events, your feedback, your devices and notification tokens, your place in households and galleys with your own allergies and dislikes, and your hidden list are deleted;
- recipes you sent to the library stay, with your name removed;
- messages you wrote in a galley stay in that galley under the name you wrote them with, no longer linked to your account;
- reports you made stay with Chef Nils support, no longer linked to your account.
A household or galley, and the people and allergies its other members entered, stays until its members remove it.
Deleting your account
In the app: Your account → Delete account. The app shows what will be deleted, asks for your password, and deletes the account immediately. There is no grace period. If you cannot sign in, write to hello@bebetterhuman.store from the email address on the account.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, for example under the GDPR in the European Union and the United Kingdom or under California law, including the right to object to processing and to complain to your data-protection authority. Write to hello@bebetterhuman.store; we answer within 30 days.
Children
Chef Nils is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. A household may list a child at the table with their allergies; that is entered by the adult who runs the household. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will delete it.
Security
Data travels encrypted (HTTPS). Database access is limited by rules that check who is asking, so people see only what they are allowed to see. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong that affects your data, we will tell you.
Changes
If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we tell you in the app before it takes effect.
